Administration stops child marriage in Balaganj || Bride’s father flees

Balaganj Correspondent : In Uttar Majlishpur village of Balaganj upazila of Sylhet, the upazila administration has stopped child marriage with the help of social organizers.
The marriage of Syeda Halima Begum, a minor daughter of Syed Nuh Ali and Nazma Begum of Uttar Majlishpur village, was fixed with Saidul Haque, son of the deceased Barik Mia of Bherakhal village of the same union. The date was fixed for Friday (November 14). Preparations were also completed; but the news reached the administration.
After receiving the news, the Balaganj Upazila Executive Officer, Women’s Affairs Officer, police, public representatives and leaders of social organizations became active.
On the instructions of Upazila Executive Officer Sujit Kumar Chanda, Field Supervisor Lehaz Uddin Muhammad Babar and Gender Premotar Shahab Uddin Shahin, along with police, went to the wedding house on behalf of Upazila Women’s Affairs Officer Badrun Nahar. UP member Dhan Mia also arrived. When they explained the prevailing law to the bride’s party, they stopped the wedding. The bride’s mother gave a promise that she would not marry her daughter until she turned 18. However, the bride’s father fled.
