At the prize-giving ceremony of the internal sports competition of the Sylhet District Press Club, the administrator of Sylhet City Corporation and president of the Sylhet District BNP, Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury, said that journalists do not merely report news— they are the mirror of society and the conscience of the nation. Through the power of their writing, people’s hopes and aspirations, social problems, injustice, irregularities and the real picture of development are brought before the nation.
He further said that journalists play an immense role in building a conscious, humane and advanced society.
He also noted that journalists have made significant contributions behind every development initiative in Sylhet city, the resolution of civic problems, infrastructural progress, education and culture and the promotion of social awareness.
The event was held on Sunday (May 10) at 3 pm in the auditorium of the Sylhet District Press Club. It was presided over by Moniruzzaman Monir, convener of the sports management committee and senior vice-president of the organization. The function was conducted by Nabin Sohel, member secretary of the sports management committee.
Among others, speeches were delivered by SZPC president Moin Uddin, former president Al Azad, senior member and acting editor of the daily ‘Sylheter Manchitra’ Faisal Ahmed Bablou and former general secretary Shah Didar Alam Chowdhury Nabel.
