On behalf of Bangladesh, Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury has called for stronger global cooperation to protect migrants’ rights, prevent irregular migration, reduce migration costs, ensure fair wages, strengthen accountability and expand migrants’ access to justice.
He made the call on Thursday (May 7) during the general debate of the International Migration Review Forum held at the United Nations headquarters.
The minister said Bangladesh is strengthening accountability and expanding migrants’ access to justice through a “whole-of-government and whole-of-society” approach.
He further stated that, as part of implementing the Global Compact for Migration-GCM to ensure safe, orderly and regular migration, Bangladesh has formed a Migration Compact Taskforce and adopted a National Action Plan for 2026–2030.
The minister noted that seven out of the ten commitments made during the first IMRF have already been implemented. In addition, Bangladesh has submitted six new commitments and joined two regional initiatives.
Describing climate change as a growing cause of migration, he called for reliable financing and technical assistance for affected countries.
Ariful Haque Chowdhury also reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to working in coordination with international partners to ensure safe migration and sustainable development. PID
