Statistics and Information Management Department Secretary Aleya Akhtar has said that the government is committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals-SDGs. To meet these targets, all stakeholders must work in a coordinated manner during SDG localization.
She made these remarks on Thursday (November 20) while addressing a seminar on SDG localization organized by the Statistics and Information Management Department at the conference room of the Sylhet Divisional Commissioner’s Office.
The Secretary said that the government has already adopted an action plan to implement the UN-declared SDGs. Special emphasis has been placed on SDG localization to ensure the involvement of people from all classes and professions.
She noted that the main objective of SDG localization is to identify the needs of disadvantaged communities and prepare development plans accordingly. Adopting development strategies that consider local culture, environment, and needs is essential for achieving SDG targets.
She added that accountability is crucial for everyone and state activities must operate within resource and opportunity constraints. Success can be achieved through honesty, sincerity, and responsibility.
During the seminar, she directed officials to prioritize : achieving 100% cultivation of fallow land in Sylhet, ensuring 100% education for children in tea gardens, and improving roads and infrastructure to boost tourism.
Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Khan Md Reza-un-Nabi presided over the program. Special guests included : Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, Director General of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, Mohammad Masud Rana Chowdhury, Additional Secretary, Statistics and Information Management Department and Md Sarwar Alam, Sylhet Deputy Commissioner
Keynote presentations were delivered by Md. Alamgir Hossain, Deputy Director and Focal Point of the SDG Cell, and Dr Md. Rafiqul Islam, Professor of Economics at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology.
