Staff Reporter: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP has formed the government with a historic popular mandate in the much-anticipated 13th National Parliament election.
BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has assumed office as the Prime Minister of the new government. President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath to him and his cabinet at the South Plaza of the Parliament House in the capital on Tuesday afternoon (February 17/Falgun).
Two Members of Parliament elected from Sylhet division have been appointed as full ministers in the new cabinet. They are BNP Chairmen’s Advisory Council member and MP from Sylhet-1 constituency Khandaker Abdul Muktadir and former mayor of Sylhet City Corporation and MP from Sylhet-4 constituency Ariful Haque Chowdhury.
Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has been assigned the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Textiles and Jute. Ariful Haque Chowdhury has been entrusted with the Ministry of Labour and Employment and Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.
In addition, the party’s central Joint Secretary General Humayun Kabir has been appointed as Adviser to the Prime Minister with the rank and status of a State Minister.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Ministers Khandaker Abdul Muktadir and Ariful Haque Chowdhury and Adviser Humayun Kabir have been receiving congratulations from various quarters in Sylhet.
