Today is December 14 Martyred Intellectuals Day. In 1971, just two days before the victory in the great liberation war, the Pakistani invading forces killed the country’s best intellectuals to make Bangladesh devoid of talent.
Jamaat-e-Islami and the then Islami Chhatra Sangha (currently Chhatra Shibir) forces of Albadar and Alshams directly supported the Pakistani invasion forces in this massacre. Hundreds of intellectuals were killed in Dhaka’s Mirpur and Rayerbazar slaughterhouses.
Like every year, the nation will remember those who are the best in knowledge and dignity by observing the day in the whole country including Sylhet.
On this occasion, Sylhet district administration will pay respects at 9 am at Shaheed Buddhijibi Samadhi adjacent to Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar. Besides, a special discussion meeting will be held in the conference room of the district administration highlighting the significance of the day at 10 am.
On behalf of Sylhet District Press Club, at 9:30 am, tributes will be paid at Shaheed Buddhijibi Samadhi. All members of the organization have been requested to attend. Staff Reporter
