Balaganj Correspondent : Although all arrangements for a wedding had been completed in Balaganj, Sylhet, the ceremony did not take place due to the groom being underage.
Because of the intervention of the upazila administration, neither the bride’s nor the groom’s side arrived at the designated community center.
The incident took place on Thursday (November 20) in Balaganj Union of Balaganj Upazila. The groom was identified as S M Mominul Islam, son of Sheikh Aminul Islam Tipu of Chanpur village and the bride as Khadija Begum, daughter of Abdur Rob of Makrsi village in Boaljur Union.
The venue for the event was Kaliganj Three Brothers Community Center. Both the groom and the bride are around 19 years old. Although the bride has reached the legal age for marriage, the groom is still two years short of the minimum age requirement.
Upon receiving information, Balaganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sujit Kumar Chanda and Women’s Affairs Officer Badrun Nahar took steps to halt the marriage.
Following this, Lehaz Uddin Muhammad Babar, Field Supervisor of the Women’s Affairs Office and Shahab Uddin Shahin, Gender Promoter and member of the Upazila Child Marriage Prevention Committee, visited the homes of both families and successfully stopped the wedding.
They also obtained written pledges from the guardians of both the bride and the groom.
