Initiative to Turn Waste into Resources Taken by SCC: Administrator at Workshop

The administrator of Sylhet City Corporation, Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury, said that SCC has begun working to transform urban waste into resources by modernizing and making waste management sustainable.
He further stated that the plan is not only to remove solid waste but also to produce bio-products from it. To achieve this, technical assistance has already been sought from relevant government institutions.
He made these remarks as the chief guest at a workshop titled ‘Formulation of a Solid Waste Management Plan for Sylhet City Corporation’, held under the project ‘Sustainable Transformation of the Urban Water Cycle in Bangladesh’ at a hotel on Wednesday (May).
The SCC administrator said, “To build Sylhet into a clean and environmentally friendly city, fundamental changes in waste management are necessary. In line with the Waste Management Policy-2021, we are working not only on the ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3R)’ approach but also on implementing a circular economy. The five-year strategic plan being developed through this workshop will play an important role in building a waste-free Sylhet in the future.”
He added, “Through stakeholders’ opinions, technical expertise and coordinated initiatives, we are committed to establishing a sustainable, environmentally friendly and climate-sensitive waste management system.”
At the workshop, jointly organized by Sylhet City Corporation and SNV, special guests included SCC Secretary Md Ashiq Noor, Acting Chief Engineer Md Ali Akbar, Chief Health Officer Dr Md Zahidul Islam, Chief Waste Management Officer Lt Col (Retd) Eklim Abedin, and Executive Engineer (Mechanical) Mohammad Ullah Sajib.
Senior SCC officials, environmental experts and representatives from various development partner organizations participated in the workshop. Emphasis was placed on the sustainable development of urban water supply, sanitation, solid waste management and drainage systems.
Speakers noted that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals-SDGs will require collective efforts through the use of modern technology and increased public awareness. Press release
