Sylhet City Corporation-SCC Administrator Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury said that Sylhet has a rich history of literary and cultural practice. The tradition of literature and culture that began in this region even before the partition of the subcontinent continues to this day. The current democratic government is encouraging literary and cultural activities and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has always supported such creative initiatives.
He made these remarks as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the ‘Sylhet Book Fair 2026,’ organized by the Sylhet Publishers Council on Sunday (10 May) at the Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar premises.
The SCC administrator said, “We always encourage literary and cultural activities. Therefore, we feel saddened whenever obstacles are created against such initiatives. The organization of a book fair in Sylhet is truly a matter of joy. I hope this book fair will be held regularly every year.”
He further said that the City Corporation would always play a positive role in the development of literature and culture in Sylhet. Full cooperation from Sylhet City Corporation would continue for organizing book fairs and implementing similar cultural initiatives.
The function was presided over by the Publishers Council Sylhet President Nazmul Haque Nazu, while the organization’s General Secretary Sufi Sufian delivered the welcome speech.
Special guests included Jamaat-e-Islami Sylhet Metropolitan Ameer Muhammad Fakhrul Islam, Chief Director of Sammilito Natya Parishad Shamsul Basit Shero and expatriate businessman Javed Ahmed. The event was moderated by Jannatul Naznin Asha.
