Minister of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment and Labour and Employment, Ariful Haque Chowdhury, said that excavating canals will improve the irrigation system in the region, which will play an important role in increasing agricultural production. As a result, the production of various crops, including Rabi crops, will increase and farmers in the area will benefit economically.
He made these remarks on Monday (April 20) while speaking as the chief guest at a meeting held after inaugurating the re-excavation work of Bhugli Canal in Nijpat Union and Jafrang Canal in Charikata Union under Jaintapur upozilla in Sylhet.
The minister said that the use of the canal will create opportunities for alternative income sources such as fish farming and duck rearing, which will help rural communities become self-reliant.
Urging people to plant fruit-bearing and forest trees along both sides of the canal, he said this would help maintain environmental balance and further strengthen the local economy.
At the same time, the minister highlighted the need to construct a bridge or culvert to facilitate communication between the two villages.
Among others present at the event were Jaintapur UNO Mohammad Golam Mostafa, upozilla BNP President Abdur Rashid, General Secretary Md Hafiz Uddin, Officer-in-Charge of thana Mahbub Rahman Molla and upozilla Planning Implementation Officer Milon Kanti Ray, along with officials from various government departments and political leaders.
Later, the minister visited the Jaintapur Health Complex and the proposed site for a technical training center in Jaintapur. PID
