Bangladesh’s Much-Anticipated Parliamentary Elections Today

Staff Reporter : Today, Thursday (February 12), Bangladesh is holding its 13th parliamentary election. Elections in the country are popularly known as `Votavuti’ and are often regarded as a national festival. Accordingly, a festive atmosphere has prevailed across the country since the announcement of the election schedule.
However, as the last three parliamentary elections were not widely participatory, this election—being held after the mass uprising of 2024—is highly anticipated by the nation. Conducted in the wake of sacrifices made during the movement, in which nearly 1,500 children, adolescents and young people reportedly lost their lives, the election carries deep emotional significance. It has profoundly stirred the national conscience.
Voters are hopeful that after nearly a decade and a half, they will be able to exercise their right to vote freely for their preferred candidates, paving the way for a government formed based on the true mandate of the people.
Voting has already begun, and voter turnout is reported to be high at polling centers across the country. As in previous elections, a significant number of women voters have been observed. Citizens are casting their votes peacefully and without obstruction.
On Wednesday (February 11), polling materials were distributed to all centers under the supervision of law enforcement agencies. Election officials reached their respective centers on time.
A stringent security arrangement has been put in place nationwide ahead of the parliamentary polls. In addition to law enforcement agencies, members of the armed forces have been deployed to ensure security. Citizens are hopeful that the voting process will be completed peacefully under these arrangements.
For the first time, a referendum is being held simultaneously with the national parliamentary elections. This means that every voter has to cast two votes this time.
