Special Correspondent, Habiganj: The Habiganj Battalion (55 BGB) of Border Guard Bangladesh has seized various Indian goods—including cosmetics, chocolates and cumin—while they were being smuggled in trucks and covered vans loaded with stones and sand.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Tanjirul Rahman, commander of 55 BGB, shared the information on Friday afternoon (November 21).
He said that based on secret intelligence, 55 BGB conducted an operation on the old Dhaka–Sylhet highway in the Satchari area of Chunarughat upazila from Thursday afternoon (November 20) until night. During the operation, five trucks and covered vans carrying stones and sand were seized and brought to the Habiganj battalion camp.
Upon searching the vehicles, BGB recovered a large quantity of Indian creams, lotions, various cosmetics, blades, chocolates and cumin seeds. The estimated market value of the seized items is over Tk 4.5 crore, said Lt Col Tanjirul Rahman.
He added that smugglers had been using the old Dhaka–Sylhet highway as a route for trafficking goods. BGB is intensifying its efforts through intelligence activities and modern equipment to curb such smuggling attempts. So far this month, BGB has seized Indian goods worth about Tk 9 crore and arrested 37 individuals in various operations.
