Today, on Sunday, January 7 (22 Paush), the 12th National Parliament Election will take place. After five years, the people of this country are poised to celebrate the nationwide voting festival. Non-stop polling will commence at 8 am and conclude at 4 pm. The formation of the new government is anticipated to be finalized by midnight.
Twenty-eight registered political parties, including Awami League, Jatiya Party, and Trinamool BNP, are participating in this year’s parliamentary elections. The number of candidates stands at 1,970, with 436 running independently. The voter demographic comprises 6,07,69,741 males, 5,89,18,699 females, and 849 voters identifying as third gender. A total of 42,148 polling stations will receive votes.
In Sylhet district, there are 35 candidates across 6 constituencies, with a total of 27,13,506 voters. Among them are 13,91,241 males, 13,22,255 females, and 10 voters of the third gender. Votes will be accepted across 1,013 centers.
On Saturday, the Presiding Officers collected the election equipment from the District Commissioner’s office, Sylhet Zilla Parishad Building, and various Upazila Nirbahi Officers’ offices. With the assistance of law enforcement forces, they transported the equipment to their respective polling stations. Additionally, 75 centers received ballot papers earlier due to distance considerations, while the rest will receive them at 3 pm.
To ensure smooth and fair polling in Sylhet, the Army, BGB, RAR, Police, Ansar members, and a striking team led by executive magistrates are actively present on the ground. Enhanced security measures have been implemented, accounting for 206 polling stations in Sylhet city and 447 stations in other areas of the district.
