Special Correspondent, Habiganj: A free eye camp was organized by Border Guard Bangladesh-BGB in Chunarughat, Habiganj.
The program was held on Tuesday afternoon (April 28) at the Balla border area. Around 200 people from the border area received free eye check-ups, along with spectacles and necessary medicines. Cataract patients were also given prescriptions for low-cost surgeries.
The chief guest was Lieutenant Colonel Md Tanzilur Rahman, Commanding Officer of BGB Battalion 55. Also present were Chunarughat Upazila Nirbahi Officer Galib Chowdhury, Acting Deputy Commander Captain Safayet Hossain and Assistant Director Mohammad Habibur Rahman, among others.
During the event, Lt Col Tanzilur Rahman briefed attendees on operational activities in the Sarail region. He stated that BGB Battalion 55 is responsible for about 1,204 kilometers of border area. From January 1 to April 25, regular and special operations led to the arrest of 76 and the seizure of drugs and smuggled goods worth over Tk 258 crore.
He also noted that firearms, ammunition and grenades were recovered during operations and drives against illegal extraction of stones and sand resulted in the seizure of large quantities of such materials.
He added that preparations have been taken in advance to prevent the smuggling of cattle and sacrificial animals hides through the border ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
