Habibur Rahman Habib, Shalla: The International Disaster Mitigation Day was celebrated on Thursday in Shalla, Sunamganj, with the theme of ‘Early warning of disasters, action for everyone’.
On this occasion, a procession and discussion meeting was organized under the initiative of the upazila administration, under the management of the Disaster Management Department and with the support of the Disaster Risk Management Program of BRAC.
After the procession, a discussion meeting was held in the Upazila Parishad auditorium under the chairmanship of Shalla Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Abu Taleb.
The discussion focused on natural disasters and man-made disasters and the speakers discussed various disaster measures including installation of lightning rods, use of shelters, road repairs, early warning of floods, storms, hail, heavy rains, non-rains and earthquakes.
Shalla Upazila Parishad Vice Chairman Amita Rani Dash, Advocate Dipu Ranjan Das, Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdullah Al Mamun, Shalla Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Aminul Islam, Shalla Union Parishad Chairman Abdus Sattar Mia, Shalla Government Degree College Assistant Professor Tarun Kanti Das and BRAC’s disaster risk management program coordinator Kazi Md Safwat Hossain spoke at the meeting.
Also present were Upazila Fisheries Officer Masud Zaman Khan, Public Health Engineering Officer Rashedul Islam, BRAC Area Manager Md Mizanur Rahman, BRAC Disaster Risk Management Program Deputy Manager Md Zakir Hossain, Project Manager Mozammel Haque, Field Coordinator Md Azizul Haque and Shahid Ali Model High school head teacher Arif Muhammad Dulal.
